APN Features: Insect Crypsis
Within the biological world, more people have likely heard of 'mimicry' or 'camouflage' than of 'crypsis', but this term is even more encompassing.
"In ecology, crypsis is the ability of an organism to avoid observation or detection by other organisms. It may be either a predation strategy or an antipredator adaptation, and methods include camouflage, nocturnality, subterranean lifestyle, transparency, and mimicry.1"
If you have ever seen a peculiar leaf stuck to your window, only to realize that it is in fact a katydid, you've been fooled by crypsis. Many animals employ camouflage or mimicry, but it is particularly fascinating within the insect world. Perhaps that's just the plant lover in me, enamored with creatures mimicking bota
Kristen's Master Feature List3-9-2017 This became too long for a status message so I'll stick it here. I have spent the last three months racking my brain to come up with a new title for my next illustration feature series. They've always been in essence the same: works I admire and favorite, with different angles taken via certain groupings (such as long features with lots of writing gushing over a certain artist, alphabetical listings from a massive list that I kept on paper, grab bag features with little tidbits recently uploaded or found, the result of years of bookmarking illustrators posted as The Attic series with a charming story at the beginning, etc. etc.). Collections of my favorites or otherwise, there are a few reasons to create series:
♥ They spice things up, so you don't get Illustrations Volume MMXVII. Unless you're into that. I'm not. I can't count that high.
♥ You get feature name recognition; "O

The Attic X: Eleihna, Calmality and STelari
Once upon a time, a young child discovered a secret room within her grandparent's home. The door was at the top of a steep staircase, and light from the corridor was all that filtered in to illuminate its darkened corners. It was, of course, the attic, and it had been in use for as long as any of them could remember (and much longer, at that). Her mother and grandmother knew about the room, of course, but to this child it was a hidden thing, brimming with marvelous treasures that astounded the imagination, and were made even more tantalizing by the adults' apparent indifference to the space. Afternoons and rainy days were spent rummaging through this attic, and in it time always seemed to slow down, even stand still.
On this day, she discovered the work of...

APN Features: Domesticated Animals - Snow Day
In the Northern Hemisphere, our warm days may be (relatively) over for awhile—plants have gone dormant while animals attempt to escape the cold—but AnimalsPlantsNature has not slowed down! In December we bring you four different features that epitomize the beautiful, fun things about winter through the lens (literally) of APN. Here is one of these, featuring furry friends who don't quite know what to make of this cold flakey stuff.
Read more about our Winter Wonderland theme here! ♥
Group Abuse: Killing our CommunitiesGroups! What a great feature on deviantART. They kicked off last year and have been a huge success. Nothing but good has come from the groups system or has it? I can tell you that right now under the layer of hype lies a deep, dark problem that's slowly killing our communities, unknown artists, and our ART. I'm going to tell you my own story, then explain.
I'm the founder of a large photography group here on deviantART. We've been using the groups system since the very first day they officially released. At the time of this writing, we have almost 3600 members. We've grown rapidly to become one of the largest and most successful photography groups around. As a founder, it's always interesting to see how your group is doing. It's a lot of fun to look at statistics, new members, submissions, and comments. Until now.
We had an excellent discussion in our group chat debating the following issues. Together, we came up with these issues and decided to raise them to the communit

Image theft: Helpful info and interviewLately, over the last few months, and really, over the last few years, there has been a lot of talk about image theft, and copyright infringement. There is little that can be done about it, its just a fact of eLife they say.. It is if you let it. There are several ways to combat image theft, be it in photoshop, or in the court room.
So you've been ripped.. Now What?
Firstly, let me say that image ripping is wrong, but we all rip music, so there is also the debate about that.. Is it wrong? Some argue the fact that people are collecting your work, using sites like flikr to collect their favorite images into one place.. Is that wrong? YES. deviantART offers free accounts with a favorite option.. Which i have seen many an account with only favorites.
That leads us to blogs. One of my images was used on an emo blog based in Russia, i couldn't understand anything, but after having it translated, m
How to make your uploads StrongerHow to make your uploads Stronger
This is a guide to making your uploads more individual and taken more seriously.
Not a absolute answer guide, just some suggestions.
* Try not to upload 10 images in a row, make sure you only upload 1-2 each day.
People need time to look through their center and if you upload to much, they are most likely to jump over a few of them.
The other thing is that it might seem to people that you just snapshot and upload right away, even though you might used a lot of time on it.
*What title should i give my image? Make sure you give a title you think suits the image, a image with a strong title makes the artwork
itself better and change the way people see the theme and concept.
My suggestion is that you think about the feeling you had when you worked on the image, or the feeling you want the image to show.
Let`s say you worked on a painting that reminded you about your childhood. You there have many titles; Childhood
100 Things I've Learned About PhotographyWe've all had our humble beginnings as photographers [or artist for that matter] and since starting our photographic journey, we've learned a lot of things along the way.
I asked our members at Photo--Assignment to share one thing, one tidbit of advice to share with other photographers; these advices are listed below [I think we do have 100!].
Feel free to continue this list by add your own comment below! And be sure to this article for safe keeping for future reference!
"Take your camera with you everywhere, you never know when that perfect photo will happen."
"Changing the F numbers and shutter speeds can make a world of difference."
"If you want real emotion, never ask someone if you can take their photo. Just do it."
"The floor is your friend. Don't be afraid to get close to it to get new, inte

About DDs, GMs and Admins-What you Should have KWhat you should have known...
...Before Posting that comment
on the newest DD that you thought was "undeserving" of a DD.
Daily Deviations are a 24 hour feature. Nothing more.
GMs select DDs based on their own feelings towards a piece of art. As artists themselves, they do not always reflect every deviants beliefs and views of art1.
A deviant receiving a DD does not have any say in the matter. In fact they probably didn't know they even had a chance at getting a DD!
...Before sending that GM a disrespectful note
about their newest given DD.
Gallery Moderators are volunteers
GMs are human just like you
GMs feature art they think is amazing. If they featured it they had a reason behind it.
Using Swear words and disrespect tends to get you ignored instead of an answer. Try writing a GM with respect.
Try seeing it their way from t
Amazing Unknown ArtworksDeviantArt is a place full of amazing artists and artworks.
Unfortunately, some of them are almost unknown and really deserve more recognition.
I've decided to feature some of my faves in this article, all of them are almost unknown (most of them only have under 100 faves, they are all under 500 faves).
