3-9-2017       This became too long for a status message so I'll stick it here. =P I have spent the last three months racking my brain to come up with a new title for my next illustration feature series. They've always been in essence the same: works I admire and favorite, with different angles taken via certain groupings (such as long features with lots of writing gushing over a certain artist, alphabetical listings from a massive list that I kept on paper, grab bag features with little tidbits recently uploaded or found, the result of years of bookmarking illustrators posted as The Attic series with a charming story at the beginning, etc. etc.). Collections of my favorites or otherwise, there are a few reasons to create series:

♥ They spice things up, so you don't get Illustrations Volume MMXVII. Unless you're into that. I'm not. I can't count that high.
♥ You get feature name recognition; "Oh that's so-and-so's feature! I will take time out of my daily life to view this."
♥ They're just fun to add to, I guess. The bulk of features I see are being run in various series. And it means you don't have to come up with random names every week.

Anyway, I believe I've finally come up with a name. I have been going through my earliest DA illustrator bookmarks, of which there are hundreds (going back to 2013), and to my horror, a lot of these people are no longer on the site. Don't get me wrong, it's certainly not a surprise; time moves on, and people with it, but it deeply saddens me that I won't get to see any more art from these people. And there's another problem: adding a 2013 photo to a photography feature is a little different than featuring a ton of artwork from, say, 2010-2015 from a person who hasn't been online in 70 weeks. I didn't used to care, I admit. Not at all. Art was art, and it was beautiful and I shared it anyway. But now I see people's point; from a feature standpoint, viewers like to look at recent-ish work, and while I'll still be going back through artist's oldest work and probably featuring a lot of that, I am deleting many of the bookmarks of people who simply aren't around anymore. :< The hindsight hurts. There are a lot of people that I could have featured last year who were active, who aren't now. It was with that line of thinking: past, present, and future, that I came up with the name The Time Machine.
My bookmarks act as a sort of time capsule, except that in the best case scenarios, the artists haven't archived their accounts, they're continuing to add to them into 2017. While I can't really go back in time, I can still delve into past artwork and share some of that, while appreciating what the artists are putting out in the present, and looking towards the future. Who knows, maybe some of those who left may come back someday.
I'm not quite sure how to go about the series. There are many types of deviants accounted for in the bookmarks, and I'm not sure what cutoff dates I should have in terms of "recent" art. I didn't care much about that when doing The Attic, though nearly everyone was active. At the very least, I have some sense of direction, and quite importantly, a name!

In an effort to declutter my profile, this is a complete list of my features from autumn 2012 until winter 2016. 2017 features will be added at some point!

These first thumbs are my original series of photography featuresnote that many thumbs are likely broken, indelicately resized or have gone missing over the past five years, and that if things look out of place, know that they looked right in the beginning. =P I can't bring myself to go back and edit this many of them (though I used to do so obsessively) so I try to pretend that they look alright.

Photography I: Almost Autumn

Everyone keeps saying that Autumn is here, that it has arrived, that the air is getting cooler, that the leaves are starting to change. We haven't had much of that here yet, except for a cooler shifting breeze; I attend school at 3,333 feet, so it doesn't take too long for the colors to work their way down. Though when it does, it's the most beautiful thing. I am nestled within the Appalachian mountains, among fields and streams and morning fog, and things that turn all sorts of reds and yellows. I would never willingly leave a place that had mountains.
I love Autumn. It has always been my favorite season ever since I was little. As the warm, long rays of late Summer flood the landscape, we have a very short time to wait, for the absolutely perfect, leaf-scented, chilly world of cute sweaters and pumpkins.
With this in mind, I went looking for beautiful photographs.
    I soon dis
Photography II: Like Autumn Leaves
Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.
-John Muir

Everything is flowing -- going somewhere, animals and so-called lifeless rocks as well as water. Thus the snow flows fast or slow in grand beauty-making glaciers and avalanches; the air in majestic floods carrying minerals, plant leaves, seeds, spores, with streams of music and fragrance; water streams carrying rocks... While the stars go streaming through space pulsed on and on forever like blood...in Nature's warm heart.
-John Muir

This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloam

:santa: Edit:
Christmas has come and gone, and I hope you all had a splendid one. If the stress or the family were a bit too much for you, just remember life will go back to 'normal' soon enough, and if that's a bit too much for you as well, try to focus on the things you love. I am currently trying to get the Hobbits through Moria. It's almost a new year; let your optimism, whatever bit you have, go wild.
I'd like to thank every person that has ever bought me a deviantART subscription. I find myself at the mercy of wonderful people like Kencho and miscellaneous administrators and others that have given me subs out of nowhere. I recently received a whopping 15 month sub that I have yet to begin to fathom. ♥ I thank you, sterbenlicht, very much, and all of you, and I wouldn
Photography IV: It's A Beautiful World
"What is uttered from the heart alone,
Will win the hearts of others to your own."
-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
There is no question about it. One can see beauty each and every day, if one will only retreat from any confines that surround them, be it solitary rooms or monotonous work;
which is not to say one's room or one's work and what one does in them cannot provide ample sources of beauty; nay, what I say is this: the singular beauty of nature and the appreciation thereof should take precedence in the early morning, and again as the day grows old, and in as much of the time in-between as the institutions man has devised to keep him busy will allow. It should be granted the task of eclipsing with the coming twilight the negative events of the day, with the hope of a better tomorrow.

Photography V: To The Sea
There once was a young girl
who yearned for the sea.
It was not because she felt
a clear connection to it;
no,
in reality
she was scared of it.
It roared with a power
she was unaccustomed to,
back and forth
across the sands,
freezing foam
rushing wildly to meet her feet.
She squealed
as it caressed her ankles,
flowing behind her
and back out to sea.
She knew how deep it was,
and how vast it was,
and that her eyes would meet nothing
as she gazed out,
save ships on the horizon.

At night, the sea was just as alive
as during the day.
She slipped off her shoes
and let her feet sink
as if into thick snow,
and was led precariously
through deep sand
to the firm water's edge.
She still had the shell
some sea creature made for her--
the first one she found
by the sea.

By day, she would look out
and watch the animals
used to the coast
going on about their live

When Summer lies upon the world, and in a noon of gold
Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold;
When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West,
Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is best!

When Summer warms the hanging fruit and burns the berry brown;
When straw is gold, and ear is white, and harvest comes to town;
When honey spills, and apple swells, though wind be in the West,
I'll linger here beneath the Sun, because my land is best!

Photography XX: Africa
This special feature includes the work of three incredible photographers: MorkelErasmus, serhatdemiroglu and catman-suha. Within these galleries, African (and other) wildlife is represented in its natural state, as opposed to the confines of a zoo. There is something beautifully endearing to be found staring into the eyes of a lion cub or mountain gorilla as they lounge about in their startlingly real surroundings. All three photographers have a gift for finding unique scenes and shooting at just the right moment, instilling each photograph with so much more than a snippet of time. They create a story.
As is the case with many areas of the world, the African continent contains amazing diversity coupled with unimaginable hardship; just as so many humans have a heart-shatteringly difficult time trying to survive, we find similar connections in the animal kingdom, amid reports of poaching, slaughte

Photography XXVI: Summer - Breathe With The Rain
"Says a native writer, Miss Emma Miles, in a clever and illuminating book on The Spirit of the Mountains: '(...)The nature of the mountaineer demands that he have solitude for the unhampered growth of his personality, wing-room for his eagle heart.' Such feeling, such longing, most of us have experienced in passing moods; but in the highlander it is a permanent state of mind, sustaining him from the cradle to the grave. To enjoy freedom and air and elbow-room he cheerfully puts aside all that society can offer, and stints himself and bears adversity with a calm and steadfast soul. To be free, unbeholden, lord of himself and his surroundings-that is the wine of life to a mountaineer."
--Our Southern Highlanders by Horace Kephart

Photography XXVII: Summer - A New Home
"Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun."

A presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man;
A motion and a spirit, that impels
All thinking things, all objects of thought,
And rolls through all things. Therefore am I still
A lover of meadows and the woods,
And mountains; and of all that we behold
From this green earth; of all the mighty world
Of eye, and ear-- both what they half create,
And what perceive; well pleased to recognize
In nature and the language of the sense,
The anchor of my purest thoughts, the nurse,
The guide, the guardian of my heart, and soul
Of all my moral being.

If you look in the right places, you will find deviantART has an incredible amount of illustrative talent. I'm happy I came across these two artists, whose galleries are full of beautiful works in a style that I adore; and, while both styles are inherently different, many similarities exist between them, both in media and in theme. Whether drawn with pencils or in ink, painted with watercolors or digitally illustrated, these are some of the nicest works I've seen on this site.
I am honored to feature both of you!

A plethora of birds, cats, rabbits, hedgehogs, giraffes, insects, trees and other entities parade through SethFitts' gallery, sporting crowns, silly hats and an aura of mystery. His mixed media paintings come alive with deep, colorful tones; prominent brushstrokes, curls, and the smooth curves of the animals' bodies define much of the work. Clippings from books and papers become backgrounds, or singular words/phrases stand out and give voice to the pieces. Themes of time and memory dreamily collide, while the mysterious, the eerie, the arcane, and the humorous each play their part.
Seth has recently illustrated Birds I've Met Through the Alphabet.
SethFitts' gallery contains over a thousand beautiful pieces, each truly one of a kind.

Illustration III: Sithzam
:iconsithzam:
The gallery of Sithzam is teeming with intricate scenes. Patterns, waves, lines and shapes, flowers, branches and other objects creatively cover the tan pages. The compositions come together with an eye towards positive and negative space. Each meticulous drawing is an immense inspiration to me, and there are many other outstanding treasures in his gallery in addition to those shown here.

Illustration IV: On Vector Art
Some children sit around in their free time (or during slow class periods) doodling fantastic monsters. Eyeballs, horns, tentacles, gaping eye sockets; fuzzy creatures and alien-like ones. The friendly and the not so friendly.
Many of these children never stop drawing. Some in turn choose to develop their techniques within a digital medium. It is a very fortunate thing when the creatures in one's mind live on throughout the years, and not only that, but continually evolve as they reproduce and cover page and screen.
All of the creatures in this feature were created using vectors. As per Wikipedia:

Illustration V: StudioUndertheMoon

Like the changing of the seasons, Justyna Kopania's gallery captivates me anew every time I see it. StudioUndertheMoon works with oils, creating dynamic scenes of cities, seascapes and brilliant moons. Oftentimes she focuses her imagination on autumn. A single setting can be represented an infinite number of ways, yet all of them are exquisitely unique works of art.
Each canvas gives way to brilliant splatters of meaningful color, which blow from the trees in great flowing streams of autumnal movement. Deep reds, oranges and yellows contrast with the dark, subdued sky, sometimes as the light is fading to evening, or as night begins to set in. The bodies of water, the rivers, reflect the shades of cascading colors exploding above them. I've always had a thing for thick brushstrokes, and these works contain delicious
Illustration VI: CuteReaper
:iconCuteReaper:
If you're searching for something both creepy and incredibly cute this holiday season, look no further than the gallery of CuteReaper.

There are a few things I particularly love about her work.
One of these things is the lighting.

CuteReaper's digital illustrations have a marked glow. Sometimes this acts as illumination in the dead of night: a pale, evanescent separation from the creatures lurking in the darkness that surrounds each girl.
And where there is light, there is shadow.

The second thing that sets these illustrations apart, for me and many others, is that the characters are absolutely adorable.
Illustration VII: Halloween Treat Bag

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. Every year I would dress up as a witch, go to my nana's neighborhood and both trick-or-treat and give out candy and mother's freshly made chocolate cupcakes. Additionally, my elementary school had a lot of caring mothers who funded classroom parties for each holiday—cakes, chips, drinks, treat bags brimming with candy, the works—and they would help the teachers show us how to make delightful crafts. This heightened my love of Halloween, a holiday already falling during my favorite time of year. Pumpkins and colorful gourds, cool weather and crunchy leaves, ghost stories, Halloween specials on TV, autumnal festivals, and enough sugar to last me till Christmas—this was my childhood.
This feature is a grab bag of some of my favorite

As evening grows late, innumerable stars boldly dot the night sky. Lamps appear and shine as orbs in the darkness. When it is night, you can feel it; it engulfs you into a world that exists in memory and feeling long after your eyes leave it behind. These worlds are created by yanadhyana.

yanadhyana is a Russian art teacher whose works have become immensely popular over the years, each deserving a close view to be fully appreciated.
Mysterious gardens overflow with stones, vines, grasses and the winding limbs and roots of trees, each mark a paradigm of precision. Her balanced use of lines and shading (while in command of the negative space of her compositions) are combined with stippling and cross-hatching to create impressively high-detailed works.
Illustration XIII: The Collection Series - 'Four'
The lovely works included within this feature come from across deviantART, and were made by artists of many illustrative backgrounds; both beginners and professionals mingle—those who specialize in traditional media, as well as those who delve into digital methods. Whether an artist is just beginning to find the sort of art they enjoy creating, or whether they have been doing it for years, makes little difference here, in that I find all of these pieces to be beautiful and inspirational treasures. Many of these styles are representative of the artist, so if you see something you like, feel obliged to explore further! As I always say, these are my favorites—go find what you love!
This is the fourth in The Collection Series, illustration features meant to showcase a number of works (in this case, "four") from a various array of artists. As the series has progressed, it has become increa
Illustration XIV: teaganwhite
:iconteaganwhite:
Of all the illustrators I have found on deviantART throughout the years, teaganwhite is one if my all-time favorites. Sweet pastels and deep earth tones set the mood in a heartwarming world of wild (and not so wild) animals, fruits, and bones. Throughout her work, the cyclic nature of life and death is a major theme.

As her profile explains,
"Nature's subtleties and reciprocal relationships between living things inspire her most, and her work typically incorporates nostalgic colors, decorative arrangements of organic forms, and meticulous detail."

Teagan, as a watercolor artist (along with other media, such as ink and digital), is deeply inspiring to me. H

Illustration XVI: socar
:iconsocar:
Socar Myles of Vancouver, BC has one of those galleries that, if it were socially acceptable to do so, I'd :+fav: nearly everything in it. Her unique pen and ink illustrations exemplify natural forms. The interconnectedness of life through birth and death—and from one life form to the next—are pervasive themes. Nature is personified: scraggly tree-men with wise faces, fair maidens of skin and bark, and sentient weeds cover the pages.

Her poem Ratty's Ghost also happens to be my favorite on this site.
'A sleeping rat gets lost in dreams
Of idle wilds and cunning schemes...'

Illustration XVII: nguyenshishi
:iconnguyenshishi:
My very first illustration journal (back in January 2013) featured the Vietnamese artists nguyenshishi and tamypu. It has been viewed over 3,000 times, more than any other illustration journal, and it brings me wonderful pleasure to present the beautiful watercolors of nguyenshishi to you all once again. Her charming characters coupled with tranquil backgrounds make for relaxed, dreamy viewing.

:iconbridge-troll:
True to his name, the gallery of bridge-troll is filled with trolls, fairies, lumbering giants and gnarled witches; these and other fantastic creatures make up the dreamlike watercolors of Larry MacDougall. His humorous fairy tale scenes are reminiscent of the themes and style of John Bauer (a personal favorite of mine).

Illustration XXI: cornacchia-art
:iconcornacchia-art:
cornacchia-art is a digital artist whose delightfully strange fantasy and dark fairy tale paintings feature adorable animals, mysterious potions, endless scheming and, of course, hapless characters. The hilarious scenes never fail to bring a smile to my face. Beautifully colored backgrounds add depth to the works, while the utmost attention is given to every detail in the sharp foregrounds. I especially appreciate her ability to accurately paint feathers, fur and hair, as well as the folds of clothes and other materials. cornacchia-art is always mindful of the interplay between light and the resulting shadows, whether filtering through the trees or illuminating a character's expressive face. Good lighting helps move the viewer's eyes around each painting, as the stories are slowly revealed. Simultaneously, the viewer is drawn in and asked to come to his or her own conclusions a

Illustration XXIII: imaginism
:iconimaginism:
If you have been on DeviantArt for any length of time, it is more than likely that you have seen the work of Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera. Chiu is the founder/creative director and Acedera the art director of Imaginism Studios in Toronto, Ontario: "an independent concept art studio working in film, television, gaming, and publishing." They have done design work for many large companies, and are able to work on what they love continuously as independent artists.
imaginism imbues each character with an expressiveness of face and of form, breathing life into even the quickest of sketches. Numerous media are represented throughout their gallery, from acrylics to digital work. Each of the artists have a style all their own, and yet this is illusive, difficult to pin down, due to the wi
Illustration XXIV: kerbyrosanes
:iconkerbyrosanes:
Whether he's working in Moleskines or on pieces of poster-sized paper, there is no mistaking that kerbyrosanes is a master of doodles. Using a collection of pens and his imagination, Kerby illustrates scenes that draw you in to investigate every corner, while hidden creatures smile back at you from the page. Random components of his pieces come together to create unified works with key themes of animals (mechanical and otherwise), nature (and its destruction), and more.

Watch Kerby create the above piece, 'Shelter', on his YT channel!

Illustration XXV: Katarinea
:iconKatarinea:
Katarzyna Katarina, known to the DeviantArt community as Katari-Katarina, is a traditional artist whose chosen medium could be considered a bit nontraditional: she utilizes coffee in addition to her watercolors. Each beautiful painting shows the work of a controlled hand, and is at the same time overflowing with expression. The women are as fluid as the paints themselves, and are highlighted with gold ink and paint which offset the deep brown tones.

Illustration XXVI: koyamori and Melonkitten
:iconkoyamori: & :iconMelonkitten:
Over the past few years, watercolor illustrations have quickly become one of my favorite types of art to find on this site. Two incredibly talented and well known traditional artists, koyamori and Melonkitten, have brought their own personal styles to the medium, and stolen the collective hearts of DA while doing so.
koyamori is a Toronto-based graphic designer and illustrator, whose degree encompasses not only graphic design, but psychology and biology (♥!) as well. As someone personally biased with regards to biology, I've always appreciated the natural elements in her work (her series of terrariums comes to mind). Her pieces are bold and at the same time dream-like. "I love to explore whimsical th

:iconsmokepaint:
Polina Yakovleva is a digital artist from Russia, whose iridescent, dream-like paintings warm the heart, no matter how chilly the subject. smokepaint leads the eyes around scenes of deep blues and greens with her bright white snow and warm yellow lights. In addition to people, adventurous mice and wise owls have become common characters. Each of her magical pieces (which can also be viewed on Behance) are as much of a joy as the next, and I especially love her Gingerbread House, Postcard, and Fairy Tales series. She has even designed full-fledged nursery room wallpapers!

Illustration XXIX: MukilteoCasualtie
:iconMukilteoCasualtie:
Through these illustration features, I've learned that I watch a lot of incredible Russian artists! One more of these is Anna Oparina of St. Petersburg, known to the DeviantArt community as MukilteoCasualtie. She is a traditional artist, whose own personal and classic storybook illustrations are bursting with detail. Within her colorful book series, she features uniquely mirrored pieces which are some of my favorites. They come in sets, with the mirrored image forming in the center of each, though I've only featured one piece or the other here. Check out her gallery for the rest of her amazing work!

Illustration XXX: pepperin
:iconpepperin:
Sarah Madeleine Kronborg, or pepperin, is a traditional watercolor artist from Norway, and someone I have wanted to feature for a very long time. If you wish to learn how to effectively layer watercolors for shading, these are great pieces to study. Each one has a dreamy storybook feel and its own beautiful color scheme, lit by cold moonlight and warm lanterns. It is a style that I adore, and her girls are just adorable. <:

Near the end of 2015, I began working with TandemFeatures, putting out one feature every Sunday throughout 2016. I think I only missed one day, and went a minute or so into Monday at one point. I am so happy with the types of photography features produced during this time. They all have simple names, moody and colorful themes, and I love them.

In Winter
"In winter, when the dismal rain
Came down in slanting lines,
And Wind, that grand old harper, smote
His thunder-harp of pines,
A poet sat in his antique room,
His lamp the valley kinged,
'Neath dry crusts of dead tongues he found
Truth, fresh and golden-winged."

Feeling at Home
"She lay back and listened to the little domestic sounds of the old house.
The fire whispered, a log shifted at its heart, the dog snored gently after his meal.
Outside, the wind stirred the trees, and somewhere a distant door banged as the breeze caught it.
Gradually, the peace that surrounded her took effect.
It had been a long day, and tomorrow would be an even harder one.
But meanwhile, the children slept as soundly as the dog on the rug at her feet,
and the night enfolded the quiet house."

"Your grief for what you’ve lost lifts a mirror
up to where you are bravely working.
Expecting the worst, you look, and instead,
here’s the joyful face you’ve been wanting to see.
Your hand opens and closes and opens and closes.
If it were always a fist or always stretched open,
you would be paralysed.
Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding,
the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated
as birdwings."

Canada
It is my sincerest apology that, even though you will find every province and territory of Canada within this feature [before glitch >:c see bottom], I feel I have not properly represented each region to the extent they deserve. To do so would have taken thirteen dedicated journals, outlining the physical and social geography of each. I do hope, however, that it will provide even a small glimpse into the beauty and magic of this country. I myself have not yet had the chance to travel to Canada, though I hope to do so in the future.
This is a special feature I put together to surprise a good friend of mine, who happens to live in one of these provinces. I wouldn't tell him what theme(s) I had in mind, only that he would love it. C: He genuinely enjoys looking at my features, and for this (and much more) I am supremely grateful. ♥ This is for you.

Woodland Wreath

As yet the blue-bells linger on the sod
That copes the sheepfold ring; and in the woods
A second blow of many flowers appears,
Flowers faintly tinged, and breathing no perfume.
But fruits, not blossoms, form the woodland wreath
That circles Autumn's brow : the ruddy haws
Now clothe the half-leaf'd thorn ; the bramble bends
Beneath its jetty load; the hazel hangs
With auburn bunches, dipping in the stream
That sweeps along, and threatens to o'erflow
The leaf-strewn banks. Oft statue-like I gaze,
In vacancy of thought, upon that stream,
And chase, with dreaming eye, the eddying foam,
Or rowan's cluster'd branch, or harvest-sheaf,
Borne rapidly adown the dizzying flood.
—James Grahame

Dead Leaves Fall and Melt
Now Autumn's fire burns slowly along the woods,
And day by day the dead leaves fall and melt,
And night by night the monitory blast
Wails in the key-hold, telling how it pass'd
O'er empty fields, or upland solitudes,
Or grim wide wave; and now the power is felt
Of melancholy, tenderer in its moods
Than any joy indulgent summer dealt.
—William Allingham

These three are tandems produced in collaboration with other awesome people through the group:

Contrasts of a Curious Mind #2One of us, Okavanga, has recently posted the first of these Features into the use and meaning of contrast in images, Contrasts of a Curious Mind #1, introducing the idea that contrast in an image need not be confined to aspects of light tonality, but can encompass contrasts as expressed by Johannes Itten, that contrasts of form and shape and quality are important, and further to the idea that contrasts of style, content and approach should also be considered when creating and viewing images. In this second instalment of "Contrasts of a Curious Mind", StemmyBotanist and Okavanga explore the idea of contrasts in Features, and we are indebted to TandemFeatures :icontandemfeatures: for supporting this endeavour.

If you ever noticed that a feature this past year looked familiar, it probably was: these are features I resubmitted through TandemFeatures throughout 2016, so that the pieces would gain a little more exposure, and I would have time during my bad weeks to pile up some new artwork or just laze around. They're mirrors of the originals (the first set of thumbs up top) without their Roman numerals. I wouldn't have had to go to so much trouble if I had submitted all of them through sta.sh in the beginning, alas!

As with the photography, I am equally proud of The Attic series. At the start of 2016 and the end of my Roman numeral-obsessed features, I needed a new angle with which to tackle my hundreds of illustrator bookmarks. I wrote a little story and the series was born, and a wealth of new people to watch came out of it. I still have hundreds of people bookmarked. I'm coming for you!

Afternoons and rainy days were spent rummaging through this attic, and in it time always seemed to slow down, even stand still.

It was, of course, the attic, and it had been in use for as long as any of them could remember (and much longer, at that). Her mother and grandmother knew about the room, of course, but to this child it was a hidden thing, brimming with marvelous treasures that astounded the imagination, and were made even more tantalizing by the adults' apparent indifference to the space. Afternoons and rainy days were spent rummaging through this attic, and in it time always seemed to slow down, even stand still.

Inktober 2016 Feature
Carved pumpkins are slowly decaying, candy bags are near empty and Thanksgiving is only a couple weeks away (a point contested by my Canadian friends). NaNoWriMo is in full swing. Before we put aside the joys of October for another year, I wanted to take a look at some of the amazing creations that came out of Inktober. Here I have showcased a small selection (not all 31 days) from a number of artists, representing only a fraction of the work uploaded by DA members throughout the past month; many artists are still uploading, so continue to keep an eye out! I didn't want to compile these last Sunday because I knew I'd be missing some from the last days.
If you like these pieces or artistic styles, go shower the artists with love!

Finally, early in 2016, we started putting out journals in the then-new AnimalsPlantsNature group created by JenFruzz. A year later, the group is going stronger than ever, and every month the team puts out tutorials, features and interviews with APN photographers from around the site. Here are those that I produced during this time:

Artists of FTP: HeikoGerlicher
As you may have noticed, April is Flowers, Trees & Plants month at AnimalsPlantsNature! We have already sat down and learned about the fabulous John-Peter, and this week we've had the pleasure of speaking with HeikoGerlicher,  whose love for nature and the medium of photography shines through his colorful and atmospheric work.
Thank you for allowing us to interview you, Heiko! Tell us about yourself, and how you first became interested in nature photography.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity for this interview!

August is Domesticated Animals month at AnimalsPlantsNature!

Domesticated animals play a pivotal role in our everyday lives, from providing us with the help and resources we as a society rely on, to being a friend we hug after a long, stressful day. Their baby counterparts steal our hearts (and internet bandwidth), and comprise a large part of the Domesticated Animals sub-gallery. No matter if you love ponies or bunnies, kittens or puppers, there is something for everyone within this highly diverse group. ♥

APN Features: Wild Animals - Bears
November is Wild Animals month at AnimalsPlantsNature!
We hope that you have been enjoying the month so far. There are a lot more tutorials and interviews in the works for the coming weeks, and for my part, I wanted to feature one of my favorite wild animals: the bear.
Many bears have lived and gone extinct throughout time, but those alive today fall within three of the Ursidae family's subfamilies. Ailuropodinae consists of the giant panda and its subspecies, the Qinling panda (basically a smaller, brown panda). Within Tremarctinae, you've got the spectacled bear, native to South America. Ursinae contains the other six species; that's right—there are only eight species of extant bears. These are the sloth bear, the sun bear, and four in the Ursus genus: the Asian black bear, American black bear
APN Features: Domesticated Animals - Snow Day
In the Northern Hemisphere, our warm days may be (relatively) over for awhile—plants have gone dormant while animals attempt to escape the cold—but AnimalsPlantsNature has not slowed down! In December we bring you four different features that epitomize the beautiful, fun things about winter through the lens (literally) of APN. Here is one of these, featuring furry friends who don't quite know what to make of this cold flakey stuff.
Read more about our Winter Wonderland theme here! ♥
